Teach your kids
It is well known that children observe and imitate their parents. But did you know that children with active parents are six times more likely to be active themselves? Behaviours acquired during childhood continue throughout the years, confirming the importance of passing on the need to move and eat healthy to your children early in life.
Start by explaining the importance and benefits of physical activity to your kids (e.g.: helps make friends, builds strong bones and muscles, strengthens the heart, and increases self-esteem). Then, encourage them to be active every day. For example: reduce the time spent watching TV, playing computer games, or surfing the Internet. Talk about extracurricular sports activities and those offered in your community centres. Sign them up for a sport that interests them. Finally, be an example for your child by being active yourself.
Here are a few ideas for being active as a family:
- Organize a picnic in the park and bring a Frisbee, a soccer ball, a baseball and gloves, etc.
- Head to the community centre for a swim, or to play basketball and other games.
- Go for a walk, bike ride, or rollerblade with friends or family.
- Transform your living room into a discotheque and dance with your kids.
- In the evening, walk the dog as a family.
- Go bowling…it’s a blast!
