Q: Hello. I have two daughters aged 12 and 14. I've always been fairly active and I thought that they would be too, but they're not. They spend too much time in front of the television. I've offered to sign them up for an activity of their choice, but they're not interested in anything. Both are starting to have problems with their weight and I'd like to help them. - Anonymous
A: You might benefit from involving the whole family in group activities such as walking or cycling instead of taking the car. You may want to begin with some type of reward to help encourage them to walk or cycle. At that age, you could also encourage them to sign up for a dance class, an aerobics dance class, badminton, tennis, etc. Give them a few ideas that maybe they haven’t considered. It may take some time, but hopefully they will see how much better they feel and how much more energy they have when they start getting active.

Q: My son doesnt like to play any sport! He rather read or watch tv. every time I suggest him an activity, we fight! what can i do? - Anonymous
A: Changing habits can be difficult, but often it takes a little encouragement and leading by example. Planning activities that you can do together as a family is one of the best ways to help children get more active. If you bring the family out for a picnic, away from the TV, your son may have no choice but to join in - hopefully he will see that activity can be fun too. Also, try talking to him about this. What is holding him back? Until you find this out, it is difficult to find a workable solution. Finding alternative activities such as rock climbing or active video games may also be something that appeals to him. The key is finding something he will actually enjoy. There is an activity out there for him, be creative and persistent until you find it!
