Q: Do you think that kids have the same internal mechanism for hunger and satiety signals? - Anonymous
A: I think that you can help your kids identify what it feels like when their body tells them that they are hungry, and also what it feels like when they have had enough. The experts in feeding children tell us that it is the adult's role to present various foods at meal time or snack time and let the child decide what and how much to eat.
Because appetite and food preferences can be changeable. Eating small amounts of food or not eating certain foods simply may mean that your child is testing his or her tastes.

Q: I’ve heard that diets can, over the long run, distort our satiety and hunger signals. Is this true? - Anonymous
A: Absolutely, since most diets dictate what we should eat, what we shouldn’t eat, and in what quantities. By relying on unbalanced rules to nourish themselves, many people lose touch with their bodies' natural signals. On-again/off-again dieting (also known as yo-yo dieting) usually makes the weight come back, and in many cases more weight is put on. So skip dieting. Instead, follow Canada's Food Guide and rely on your satiety and hunger signals. These changes will last a lifetime and you won't feel as though you're "on a diet".
