Stress and healthy weight

1 questions
Q: I think I am eating healthy and only a certain amount but I don't seem to be getting anywhere in my weight. I have started walking on the treadmill for fifteen minutes in the morning. I know that is not much yet but I thought it would be some sort of a start. Does stress really make a person gain weight or keep weight on. - bornfree55
A: First, I would recommend doing the "My Healthy Weight Assessment" on this website. It will let you know if you’re in the healthy weight range for your height.

As for eating healthy, check out www.myfoodguide.ca to see whether you’re eating according to Canada’s Food Guide. Most of us don’t get enough vegetables, fruits or milk products. These foods can help us get to and stay at a healthy weight.

Your question about stress and weight gain is interesting. Yes, there is research that shows people who are stressed have higher levels of the hormone cortisol, which can affect how much food you eat.

Good for you for walking on the treadmill! Fifteen minutes is better than zero minutes. When starting to be more active, it’s always better to start off slow. Gradually work up to 30 to 60 minutes a day. But you can take this goal beyond the treadmill. Everything you do in your daily life counts, big or small: climbing stairs, walking to run your errands, playing with the kids, gardening, shovelling snow, etc. The more you do, the better you’ll feel.

It is also recommended that you include strength building exercises 2-4 times a week, plus flexibility and endurance exercises 4-7 times a week, to maintain good health.

Check out the article on “To Each His Own Activity” on this website for ways to stick to your activity commitment in the Nutrition Info section.
