Q: Are there really any nutritional benefits to using brown sugar instead of white? - moxy
A: Brown sugar is not more nutritious than white. There are no significant nutritional differences between these types of sugars. Brown sugar is made up of white sugar crystals that have been flavoured and coloured by small amounts of dark sugar syrups (molasses). Different brown sugars have different amounts of molasses added to them. - Zannat Reza

Q: I had a debate recently with a friend about the nutritiousness of nutella. I think that the hazelnut content means it's high in protein, but my friend seems to think that the fat and sugar in the product trumps the protein benefits. Can you weigh in on how nutritious nutella actually is? Thanks. - Nuts for Nutella
A: If you take a closer look at the nutrition label and ingredients list, you’ll notice that the first ingredient is sugar, then modified palm oil, then hazelnuts. This tells you that the product falls in the “Okay to eat sometimes” category. Also, each tablespoon contains only 1 gram of protein and 100 calories. However, because of the hazelnuts, it provides a source of vitamin E. For young kids with high calorie needs, this type of product may make foods taste better. For example, on peanut butter sandwiches or with strawberries and other fruit.

If you’re looking for foods that have protein, go for foods in the Milk & Alternatives, and Meat & Alternatives food groups. These foods include: milk, yogurt, cheese, lattes, smoothies, lean meat, chicken, lentils, beans, eggs, tofu, and nuts.
