I have come to understand that I am much more likely to stick to a healthy change if I work on one change at a time instead of making all the changes I know I have to make at once.

It's important to follow the Canadian Food Guide. Any diet that promises rapid weight loss is not healthy. Weight lossed during fad diets usually returns as soon as the fad diet ends. A healthy weight loss is about 1-2 lbs a week.

I have always lost the weight through cutting back on sweet foods and exercising. Fad diets never work! You end up gaining back the weight that you lost on the diet, plus much more.

I try to eat at least 3 fruits each day. I find this helps curve my cravings for sweets. I am a firm believer in having fresh fruits and vegetables. I am not big on frozen or canned anything. I buy groceries that I will use that week to keep costs and waste down. Currently I am home nursing a 3 month old so it's a little easier to make delicious and nutritious meals. I tried many diets thinking each one would help me lose weight and feel better about myself. Every time I started a new fitness program and diet I would quit after only a few weeks. I would feel that the program let me down because I didn't see instant results. I realized that this was my issue. If I didn't see instant results I would quit; thinking it didn't work and was a waste of time. Once I realized this little game that my mind was playing with me I was able to take control of my life.

Good habits take time to develop. Instead of giving up the whole regiment when I eat junk or don't go to the gym, I look at the next day as a 'new' day. This 'way of thinking' is also a habit to develop. Often people who are overweight get easily discouraged when they fall back to a bad habit. Never ever give up. Like anything in life, doing something over and over again will make it a habit and in turn will eventually become more and more consistent.

Fad diets never work for the long term, you know that old saying" if it sounds too good to be true than it probably is" this is so true. It takes hard work and determination to live a healthy life style!

One thing I have learned over the years is most diet foods aren't good for you. They are low in fat but packed with sugar. The key is to eat smaller meals but eat more often. My energy level is steady throughout the day and I rarely feel hungry. In my opinion, dieting should only be temporary, eating right is a way of life. And dessert is a judgement call. :)

Find a diet that you can maintain for 3 years. Grape diet? Can you live on grapes for 3 years? You will lose weight by substitute meals with grapes for sure. But as soon as you come back to normal meals, you will gain again.
